Description

Due to continued growth an established civil engineering contractor that carries out marine and environmental projects across the South East of England are seeking to recruit a Design Manager to complement their team in Sussex.
The business boasts an enviable portfolio of projects across Sussex, Hampshire and Kent, they are part of a wider group with a strong international presence and maintain a reputation as an employer of choice able to offer rewarding long-term career prospects to their employees.
This is a hybrid working role with two to three days per week in Sussex.

The Role
The Design Manager will be required to:
Lead and manage the department in technical and design matters.
Ensures the timely provision of efficient and innovative solutions at bid stage.
Delivers safe and efficient temporary works designs to operations teams.
Plans and manages team priorities to solve challenging technical problems in construction. Supports pre-contract and operations to develop scope and manage consultants in design & build contracts or temporary works where outsourced.
Provides advice on technical tools for design and data management.

Responsibilities of the Design Manager will include;
• Build and lead a diverse team to deliver designs and technical support across a broad range of subjects.
• Plan and manage team to deliver a diverse workload of complex and potentially high value bids and projects to meet company goals.
• Assess design risks, including commercial and professional liability risks, and mitigate and manage effectively.
• Review internal and external design proposals, considering CDM compliance, value for money and sustainability and innovative opportunities.
• Undertake ECI, advising clients and design teams on buildability, temporary works, GI and SI requirements, plant and plant access, etc.
• Promote the technical capabilities of the organisation with Clients including at conferences.
• Provide technical advice, including product specifications and suitability, geotechnical site investigation & surveying procurement & specification.
• Identify work opportunities with external designers to build and maintain relationships, improving competencies, trust and collaboration with our supply chain.
• Engage with industry innovation and specialist groups to maintain a company presence at the leading edge. (eg GIRI, SSP Group, Temporary Works Forum, BIM4Water and Environment Agency Digital Data Group)

Skills & Knowledge of the Technical Services Manager / Design Manager
• Commercial awareness (NEC3,4 & JCT)
• QHSE legislation
• Managing people, site experience, project management, commercial management
• Structural Engineering and Geotechnical Engineering
• Understanding of the certified management systems ISO 9001 -2015, ISO 14001- 2015 & ISO 45001 – 2018

Experience Required
The Design Manager will be able to demonstrate;
• Proven experience in a design office environment including delivery of design and build projects,
• Managing & leading a Technical team
• Competent with AutoCAD software packages, AutoCad, Civils 3D, Navisworks, Infraworks, Robot, ReCap Pro, etc.
• Knowledge of B.I.M. (Building Information Modelling), CDEs and associated information management systems
• EuroCode Design / CDM Regulations

Qualifications
• Degree in Civil or Structural Engineering
